NAFLD to MASLD: What’s In A Name Change?

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has been renamed metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) to better reflect its underlying cause and reduce stigma. The new name emphasizes metabolic health rather than alcohol use and avoids language that patients found misleading or harmful. This change aims to improve awareness, research efforts, and patient care for a disease that affects over one billion people worldwide.
